"So important for someone to come in and make an immediate sort of impact," a commentator said about Patel's performance.
Cricketer Nensi Patel capped her maiden international series with a match-winning performance in the third and final T20 match against Zimbabwe on Sunday, claiming her first Player of the Match award as the White Ferns completed a 3-0 sweep in Hamilton.
The off-spinning all-rounder, the first player of Indian origin to represent the White Ferns, delivered her best figures in international cricket yet, taking 3 for 8 from her four overs as Zimbabwe were restricted to 64. Patel struck at key moments, removing Beloved Biza, Chiedza Dhururu and Adel Zimunu in a tight, controlled spell that squeezed any chance of a late recovery.
“Soak the moment in!” a commentator exclaimed as Patel celebrated one of her wickets, a release of emotion after earlier chances had gone down in her previous overs.
New Zealand’s batters wrapped up the modest chase in just 5.4 overs, sealing a dominant 10-wicket victory and underlining the gulf between the two sides across the three-match series.
After the match, one of the commentators said, "I thought she was outstanding. She bowled in the powerplay, she bowled with a lot of discipline, she bowled with a lot of accuracy. Like I said, I'd be keen to see how she is against a tougher opposition when she's put under pressure, but she definitely showed that she had the skills."
He pointed to Patel's all-round skills, saying she had a safe pair of hand and was handy with the bat "although we haven't seen it in this series".
"So important for someone to come in and make an immediate sort of impact," another commentator said. "You sort of feel like you belong now...She found a bit of turn on the wicket, but she'll grow in confidence and like we see in the men's game, the more you're in the environment, the better player you become."
For Patel, though, the third game represented something more personal. Just days earlier she had spoken about how special it felt to pull on the White Ferns cap, describing the opportunity as the reward for years of hard work and persistence.
The off-spinning all-rounder was centrally contracted for the 2022-23 season but didn't get to play for White Ferns. She was Northern Brave's top run-scorer in the Super Smash this summer and second-equal wicket-taker.
On her debut last week, she bowled tidily but went wicketless, building pressure without breakthrough. In the second match she found her rhythm, claiming 2 for 11 and playing a key role in another comprehensive win. By the third game she was bowling with authority, varying her pace cleverly and attacking the stumps, finishing the series with five wickets and emerging as one of New Zealand’s most effective bowlers.
After the first match, when she said she simply wanted to “do my role for the team and take every opportunity”, it reflected Patel's grounded ambition. Born in India before moving to New Zealand, she described the occasion as a proud moment for her family both in the stands and back home.
