India, Australia's second-largest source of international students after China, has been moved from Assessment Level 2 (AL2) to Assessment Level 3 (AL3), the highest assessment tier under Australia’s student visa framework.
Like India fellow countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan have also been moved into the AL3 category. Pakistan continues to remain in the highest-risk tier.
The move has triggered concern in India, given its long-standing role as one of Australia’s key international education markets.
Authorities in Australia say this change is to address emerging integrity concerns while still supporting genuine students seeking quality education.
“This change will assist with the effective management of emerging integrity issues, while continuing to facilitate genuine students,” said officials.
These changes point to tougher checks and heightened scrutiny, though access has not been fully shut off.
