More than $12,000 have been raised for the family of a Kiwi-Indian father of two who died after being struck by a car while cycling home from work in Auckland.

Bhupesh Patel was critically injured in the crash on Rosebank Road in Avondale at about 3.50pm on September 2. He died in hospital on Saturday as a result of his injuries.

A Givealittle page created by Patel’s friends and colleagues at JMP Engineering was launched on September 7 and had raised more than $12,000 within its first day.

Patel was a much-loved member of the JMP Engineering team, according to the fundraising page, which was set up to support his family following his death.

All money raised will go directly to Patel’s family to help with the immediate and ongoing financial pressures they face. The campaign is due to remain open until January 15, 2027.

Patel was a husband and father to two young boys. His colleagues said he had left work earlier than usual on the day of the crash because he wanted to get home in time to take his sons to their Kempo class.

“Tragically, he was struck by a vehicle before he made it home,” the fundraising page said.

JMP Engineering described Patel as kind, generous with his time and always willing to help others.

“Those of us who worked alongside him knew not only his ability and dedication, but also his warmth, humour and friendship,” it said.

Police said the Serious Crash Unit had examined the scene following the crash and inquiries into the circumstances remained ongoing.
